Description

Returned commission to deal with insurgents, Norfolk and Suffolk, held by William de Ufford earl of Suffolk and associates, at Mildenhall, Bury St Edmunds, Hadleigh, Sudbury, Clare, Bungay, Ipswich, Eye and Hollesley, Suffolk, on 27 June-3 July and 18 July-5 Aug 1381, and at Norwich, Horning, East Dereham, Hickling, Holt, Great Yarmouth, Castle Rising and Swaffham, Norfolk, on 6-20 July 1381; under extra-ordinary commission (not in CPR 1381-1385) dated 24 June 1381 to the earl, Bogo Skales, Thomas de Morieux, William de Elmham, John Brewes, John de Burgh, Stephen Hales, Richard Waldegrave, William de Kerdeston, William Wynkfeld, John Holkham, Edmund Lakyngheth and William Snetesham, jointly or severally, to maintain the peace in Norfolk and Suffolk; to proclaim that all those innocent of the recent levies and gatherings there, or who were forced to join them, be in peace, but that those who continue to adhere to such levies and gatherings shall be dealt with by the best and speediest ways and means; and to put down, repel, resist, do justice upon and punish them, according to the law and their discretion. Returned into Chancery, and thence transmitted to King's Bench in pursuance of a mandamus dated 13 May 1382 (m 1), directed to the earl's executors and calling in the indictments, records, processes, rolls and memoranda of this commission: file and enrolment (indictments and jury panels, Suffolk mm 2-42, Norfolk mm 46-122; enrolled indictments, Norfolk mm 123-128, Suffolk mm 129-130; enrolled pleas, Suffolk mm 43 and 45, Norfolk m 44). The Suffolk indictments file and enrolments excludes those for the hundreds in the liberty of St Edmund between the 17th and 19th centuries, this file was among the Assize and Quo Warranto Rolls..
