Entry Book of General Orders. Certified extracts from General Orders and Memoranda issued at Kingston, Jamaica.The General Orders cover the following subjects: appointments including that of Major General John McDonald, Major General Bunbury [Thomas Bunbury], Major General Lambert [Samuel Lambert], Colonel Capadose [Henry Capadose, 1st West India Regiment], Major General Sir Richard Doherty and Major General E W Bell [Edward Wells Bell] as successive Commanders of Forces in Jamaica, arms and ammunition, attachments, baggage, boards of enquiry, boards of survey, boys to be trained as musicians, chaplains, clothing, collection of Income Tax, commissariat, contract prices for the conveyance of officers between stations, courts martial, courts of enquiry, deaths, deserters and rewards for their apprehension, discharge, distribution of troops, duties, duty on the west coast of Africa, fuel, guards of honour, horses, mules and donkeys, inspections by the Major General Commanding, invalids, leave, medical including deployment of surgeons and instructions for dealing with epidemics of fevers, pay and allowances, payment of passage money to widows in 'distressed circumstances' following the death of their husbands, pensioners, postal arrangements, promotions, provisions, rations, reliefs, retirement, returns, selection of a black soldier to be sent to England for training as an armourer (GOs 671/3 and 675/1), servants, ships' passages to England and elsewhere, stationery, stores, supplies, transfers, transport, troop movements, wine and brandy for medical use, and widows, women, children and orphans.There are a high number of instances of death and desertion and also a much higher than normal number of names of rank and file soldiers in the orders. An increasing number of orders detail transfers of officers and soldiers between stations for the benefit of their health. Reference is made to black pensioners and black servants.Corps serving in this command at the time included: Royal Artillery, 16th Regiment, 36th Regiment, 38th Regiment, 48th Regiment, 56th Regiment, 77th Regiment, 97th Regiment, 1st West India Regiment, 2nd West India Regiment, 3rd West India Regiment, Royal Engineers, African Artillery, Ordnance Department and the Commissariat.Places at which units were stationed in Jamaica included: Angels, Apostles Battery, Botanic Garden, Falmouth, Fort Augusta, Kingston, Lucea, Maroon Town, Montego Bay, Morant Bay, Newcastle, Port Antonio, Port Royal, Rock Fort, Spanish Town, Stony Hill and Up Park.In addition to Jamaica the orders also refer to Antigua, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, Cape Coast (Africa), Demerara, Dominica, Gambia, Grenada, Honduras, McCarty Island, Nassau, New Providence, Nicaragua, Saint Kitts, Saint Lucia, Saint Thomas, Saint Vincent, Sierra Leone, Tobago, Trinidad, Turks Island, and Windward and Leeward Islands.The majority of the extracts were signed by P Farquharson [Lieutenant Colonel Peter Farquharson, 65th Regiment], J Palmer [Major James Palmer, 3rd West India Regiment] or T H Tidy [Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Holmes Tidy, 14th Regiment], Deputy Adjutants General, or Cavendish Boyle [Lieutenant Cavendish Spencer Boyle, 48th Regiment], Thomas Lambert [Lieutenant, Royal Artillery], H H Morant [Lieutenant Horatio Harbord Morant, 68th Regiment], J F Ferris [Lieutenant John F Ferris, 97th Regiment], George Bunbury [Captain Stonehouse George Bunbury, 67th Regiment], W C Bancroft [Lieutenant William Charles Bancroft, 16th Regiment], J D Blythe [John David Blythe, 3rd West India Regiment] or A P S Green [Captain Andrew Pellett Scrimshire Green, Royal Artillery] Assistant Military Secretaries.Also included are copies of letters covering the transmission of General Orders and Two Monthly Staff Returns to the War Office.
