Description

Embarkation Book. This book contains details of the embarkation of the British Army from the Crimea at the conclusion of the Crimean War. The front of the volume covers embarkations from the Crimean ports of Balaklava and Kamiesch; the rear has a list of passages from Balaklava.

  • Embarkations from Crimea is a statistical breakdown by ship showing date, vessel, corps, and numbers by rank including women, children and horses. There is a remarks column which may give individual officers names, embarkation and sailing dates, and details of guns and equipment. It covers the period 1 May to 12 Jul 1856.
  • Passages from Balaklava relates to the departure of officers from that port. It gives date, name of officer with details of servants and horses, vessel, destination, whether with or without rations and remarks. The last usually gives the authority to travel. It covers the period 8 Apr to 1 Jul 1856.
