Research Institutes
The research institutes included in this department are principally research bodies established by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, those research organisations which through transfer, came under the aegis of the Department, and other research bodies involved in related areas of scientific or industrial research.
Research Councils
In 2002, Research Councils UK (RCUK) was established as a strategic partnership between the seven UK Research Councils. This was following a Government review, to enable the Councils to work together more effectively to enhance the overall impact and effectiveness of their research, training and innovation activities, contributing to the delivery of the Government's objectives for science and innovation.
The seven individual Research Councils are: the Arts and Humanities Research Council (in ST); the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (in AY); the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (in EV); the Economic and Social Research Council (in EV); the Medical Research Council (in FD); the Natural Environment Research Council (in HA); and the Science and Technology Facilities Council (in ST).
