Description

George Canning to Lord Chatham, sending copies of two letters received from Mons. Champagny and Comte Romanzoff, and mentioning others from the two Emperors to the King

Letter marked Private & Secret [George Canning (1770-1827), statesman; Treasurer of the Navy, 1804-6; Foreign Secretary, 1807-9 and 1822; President of the Board of Control, 1816-21; Prime Minister, 1827. Jean-Baptiste Nompére de Champagny (1756-1834) and Count Nicholas Romanzoff (1753-1826) were the Foreign Ministers, respectively, of France and Russia, the two Emperors referred to being Napoleon and Alexander I. At the Treaty of Tilsit, 8th July 1807, between France and Russia, Alexander joined the `Continental System'. In October 1808, the two Emperors offered England a treaty of peace, which was refused]
