Description

Captured ship: Tortoise of Hamburg (master Hinrich Stoffell).

History: a Hamburg merchant ship (200 tons) bound from Hamburg to Porto, laden with pipestaves, iron, linen, sword blades, and steel; taken on 18/28 November 1692 in the Downs by the privateers London (William Lord commanding) and Expedition (James Johnson commanding), and brought into the Downs; the ship was part of a larger Hamburg convoy, all of which were seized at the same time.

Court Papers numbered CP 1-CP 7/10b:

  • [CP 1-CP 2]: interrogatories, three examinations;
  • [CP 3]: allegation;
  • [CP 4]: claim to the ship and cargo on behalf of merchants in Hamburg;
  • [CP 5-CP 6]: allegation and order in council relating the the Hamburg convoy taken in the Downs, of which the Tortoise was a part;
  • [CP 7-CP 7/10b]: attestation relating to the ship's voyage and cargo with annexed exhibits all belonging to John Lloyd Junior, comprising accounts, commercial letters from Cornelius Bckhoff at Hamburg discussing, cargo, shipping and insurance, invoice, further commercial letters from Stepney & Trevor at Porto, one attestation as to the ship's cargo and voyage, charterparty with an English translation.
