The Engineering Inspectorate (EI) was responsible for policy formulation and implementation; administration and enforcement of regulations governing the quality, continuity, and safety of electricity supply in Great Britain; and carrying out associated inspections, testing and investigations. EI was also responsible for conducting public enquiries and hearings into contested proposals of the gas and electricity industries (overhead lines, underground cables, power stations, substations, telecommunications masts and pipelines) and technical advice and electricity supply matters.
