Description

Folio 305: Benjamin Walker, HMS Helder, Humber. Reports there is no one aboard the ship who corresponds to the name or descriptiion of the person mentioned in the letter of July 27 1805.

Folio 306: Attached to Folio 305. John Horsley, Beverley, on behalf of Samuel Loft, to the Admiralty. July 23 1805. Mr Loft has a son Timothy Loft who has been on a two-year voyage to Greenland on the Royal George of Hull and when he returned to the Humber he was impressed and taken aboard a receiving ship in Hull Roads. The rest of the crew left the ship to avoid the press, Timothy Loft stayed aboard, thinking he was in no danger of being pressed because of a long-standing medical complaint. Doctor Herkman of Hull has examined him and found him unfit for His Majesty's service because of a rupture in his private parts, the Act [of Impressment] makes all men with this condition not subject to the press. July 23 1805 James Graves, Minister of Beverley and Churchwardens Joseph Bateson and Edward Osgerby certify that they believe the facts relating to Samuel Loft and his son Timothy stated above are true.

Folios 308-309. enclosure with folio 305. Letter dated 5 August 1805 by John Horsley, Beverley, to the Admiralty. Acknowledges receipt of the letter concerning Timothy Loft, his father has had a letter from him stating that he is aboard HMS Thalia, Captain [James] Walker, in Grimsby Roads, hopes the Admiralty will agree to discharge him as the condition mentioned in his previous letter is sometime very bad.
