Folios 360-361: John Wright, HMS Swift, Deptford. Lieutenant William J. Hughes has absented himself without leave and has sent the enclosed letters. As he does not intend to return, requests another Officer is appointed.
Folios 362-363: enclosure with folios 360-361. William J. Hughes. Owes a considerable sum of money and will be arrested unless he goes into hiding. Requests he is replaced. Fears he would not be able to carry out his duties at sea with the current anxiety he is suffering.
Folios 364-365: enclosure with folios 360-361. William J. Hughes, HMS Swift, Deptford, 13 October 1804, to Captain Wright. Is in considerable debt and cannot reach a compromise with his creditors. Requests he is replaced and retired on half pay until he can settle his affairs.
