Description

Folios 351-352: John Wright, HMS Swift, Deptford. Has received the letter of 12 October ordering a report on the case of James Gullon who was engaged as Line Manager in whale fishing for next season, and who was pressed the HMS Swift. The only protection this old seaman has was granted by the Collector of Customs at Hull, as long as he continued on board the vessel. As Captain Wright found him straying he sent him on board HMS Swift. His appearance does not tally with the description. Folios 353-354: Enclosure with folios 351-351: W.H.Bolton, Hull, 10 October 1804 to the Admiralty. Request for discharge on behalf of James Gullon, enclosing the certificate confirming that he gave bond on 21 July to proceed as Line Manager to the Greenland Sea in the ship Acticon , Hunter Rose, Master. He has been pressed on board HMS Swift, now lying at Deptford.

Folio 355-356: enclosure with folios 351-351. W.H.Bolton, Hull, 22 October 1804, to the Admiralty. Has recieved the response stating that the man on board does not match the description of James Gullon, and cannot therefore be released. The discrepancy may be due to the haste in which the Clerks of the Custom House complete the Protections, but he gives assurance that it is definitely James Gullon. Now encloses the affidavit of the Master, sworn before a magistrate, and requests his discharge.

Folios 357-358: enclosure with folios 351-352. John Wray, Kingston upon Hull, 22 October 1804. Sworn affidavit of Hunter Rose, Master of the ship Acticon, confirming that James Gullon, pressed on HMS Swift, is the same man who gave bond at the Custon House on 21 July 1804 to proceed in the Acticon to the Greenland fishing next season as Line Manager.

Folio 359: enclosure with folios 351-352. R.A.Harrison and ?, Custom House, Hull, 10 October 1804. Certifying that James Gullon gave security in bond dated 21 July 1804 to proceed the folowing season to the Greenlad seas or Davis's Strait in the ship Acticon, Master Hunter Rose, as Line Manager.
