Description

Folios 310-315: Interrogation of 4 men taken from French boats at Bertheaume Bay on 6 August 1804 by Captain Wood, HMS Acasta.

Folios 310-311: List of 36 questions with answers from Alexe Le Brune, fisherman, of Recouvrance, Brest.

Folio 312: Answers from Jean Leonard, mackerel fisherman, of Recouvrance, Brest.

Folio 313: Answers from Harvey Garrick, carpenter, Recouvrance, Brest.

Folios 314-315: Answers from Thomas Le Brune, seaman, of Recouvrance, Brest.

All except Harvey Garrick formerly served in the French navy. Questions about number and nature of ships in Brest Road and their movements over the last week. Three 3-deck ships named: Le [? Vengeur], Le Republicain and L'Invincible. Two 48-gun ships: Le Foudroyant and Alexander. Sixteen 14-gun ships, some named. Questions and answers about ships in dock and in harbour at Brest, manning of the fleet, name of the Commander of the Division (Louis Dordelin in Le Foudroyant) and of the Commander in Chief at Brest (General Gantehaume in Le [?Vengeur]), and the previous Commander. Questions about popular and military support for the new governmenet, prices of food and wine, numbers of gun boats in Brest, boats being built, etc.
