Folios 264-265: William Wooldridge, HMS Scourge, the Downs. Responding to directions from Admiral Rowley to report on Edward Rogers, said to be American, and whose discharge has been applied for by the consent of the United States. He was pressed from a brig from Shields and the only thing he has to prove he is American is the enclosed, drawn up by a Notary Public in New York. Since the year 1799 he has not produced anything from the State he pretends to have been born in, and which British seamen may get by paying for. The oath administered at Shields was by a person connected with the vessel he was taken from. The American Consul in London only acknowledges having seen it. Besides which, his his accent is from Durham, and in the late war he was Gunners Mate for two years.
