Description

Folios 230-231: Daniel Woodriff, HMS Calcutta, Spithead. Has received the letter of 26 July. Distressed about the information of the delay of the box sent to the Admiralty. The box had a label"The proceedings of HMS Calcutta" and contained a letter addressed to William Marsden, Secretary of the Admiralty Board, stating the vessels' arrival, state and condition etc. Another box delivered at the same time was addressed to the Commissioners of HM Navy and both were deposited at 5pm on 23 July at the Commissioners Office [Portsmouth] to be forwarded immediately. He would have been delighted to convey them himself but Admiral Montague and he agreed they should be sent through the usual channels (the Commissioners Office), where he personally delivered them, mentioning their importance. He trusts the Board will appreciate he had no powers to send them any other way. Footnote: The box from the Calcutta was addressed to William Marsden and went from The George Inn by Palmers coach on Wednesday morning, as did the box addressed to the Commissioners of the Navy. Some other boxes addressed to Public Offices were forwarded by Clarkes coach on Tuesday evening although those boxes were not landed until the morning after the boxes addressed to the Admiralty Board.
