Description

Folios 204-205: D Woodriff, HMS Calcutta, Spithead. Encloses copies of two letters received from His Excellency Governor King at Port Jackson, both of which he felt compelled to obey.

Folios 206-207: enclosure with folios 204-205.

a) Philip Gidley King, [Governor, New South Wales], Sydney, 9 Jan 1804, to Captain Daniel Woodriff, HMS Calcutta. Encloses a copy of a letter from Lieutenant Houston of HMS Calcutta. Has granted leave to Lieutenant Governor Joseph Foveaux to return to England on personal business, now made more necessary by his asthmatic condition. As the strength of the New South Wales Corps will not allow two officers being absent, he proposes that Lieutenant Houston should administer the government of Norfolk Island during Lieutenant Foveaux's absence, or until other orders are received. Encloses a copy of the appointment letter he will give Lieutenant Houston.

b) Philip Gidley King, [Governor, New South Wales], Sydney, 14 March, 1804, to Captain Daniel Woodriff, HMS Calcutta. Encloses a copy of a letter from Lieutenant Menzies of the Royal Marines under Captain Woodriff's command. There are so few officers in Sydney, and a need to resettle the coal harbour according to Lord Hobart's instructions, which should be done immediately because of the advantages it offers. Without Lieutenant Menzies' assistance this would need to be postponed, and as it is of general benefit, he sends it to Captain Woodriff for consideration.
