Description

Folios 312-313: George Wolfe, HMS L'Aigle, Plymouth. Reports that Lieutenant Hastings did not rejoin HMS L’Aigle until the 16 July, four days after the French vessels, La Charante and Le Joie, were destroyed. His leave commenced on 20 May but he did not leave Plymouth until 12 June. Three days after his return, he refused to dine with him (Captain Wolfe); he is the first man ever to do so. When he reprimanded the gunroom steward’s assistant, Lieutenant Hastings reported that he had been deputised by the whole mess to say they would do without a man servant. He has never received such a rude message before and the second and third Lieutenants and Master denied having anything to do with such a message. Lieutenant Hastings is a youth of independent means and is very independent of good order and discipline. He has been the promoter and leader of disaffection and at present he has the two marine Officers and Surgeons in his party. He therefore requests that Lieutenant Hastings is removed from HMS L’Aigle. He adds that he reported Lieutenant Hastings twelve months previously for his unruly and turbulent behaviour. He is the least experienced Officer and Seaman he has ever met.
