Description

Captured ship: Trowe of Flushing (master Arthur Soansbecke otherwise Soansbeake [Anthony Sonnesbeck]).

History: a Dutch merchant ship, laden with wine; taken on 10/20 March 1671/1672 by HMS Mary Rose (William Davies commanding) and brought into Portsmouth on 17/27 March 1671/1672, where the crew ran away for fear of imprisonment the following day, the master boasting first that they had a new and better ship waiting in Flushing.

Court Papers, numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1-CP 2]: two affidavits on the perishing nature of the cargo of wine, 13 April 1672;
  • [CP 3]: two examinations taken at Portsmouth, 26 April 1672.

Extra information: IND 1/9012 f.83: ship and lading condemned, 12 July 1672.
