Description

Captured ship: Tarbrush of Amsterdam [otherwise Gele Teerkwast, Yellow Tarbrush] (commander Adrian Derricksen Quast otherwise Aderiaen Dircksz Quast)

History: a Dutch privateer (buss, 50 tons, 8 guns, bought 6 weeks previously at Emden), bound on a cruise from [Amsterdam]; taken on 22 October/1 November 1672 off Great Yarmouth sands by HMS Portsmouth (James Page commanding), and brought into Harwich.

Court Papers, numbered CP 1-2:-

  • [CP 1]: two examinations taken at Harwich, 31 October 1672; thesegive Emden in error as 'in Holland', rather than as in East Frisia / Ostfriesland /Oost Friesland;
  • [CP 2]: certificate regarding original privateering commission.

Ships Papers, numbered SP 1-2:-

  • SP 1: privateering commission issued by William III, Prince of Orange (at Bodegrave), for an unnamed ship to be commanded by Aderiaen Dircksz Quast, 22 September 1672, bond and oath registered by the Amsterdam admiralty on 26 September 1672;
  • SP 2: copy of the above privateering commission, registered by the Amsterdam admiralty, 27 September 1672.
