Description

Captured ship: Susanna of Weymouth, otherwise Susan (master Henry Feaver; prize master Popa Popus of Amsterdam, otherwise Poppe Poppensz)

History: an English merchant ship (frigate, 30-60 tons, 7 prize crew), bound from Seville to Weymouth and London, laden with oranges, lemons, fruits and wine; taken on 22 December 1673/1 January 1674 about 30 leagues northwest, or about 20 leagues north northwest of Finisterre, or in 44° 24’N, by the 24-gun Dutch privateer Isabella Katherine of Amsterdam, otherwise Ijsabella Cattrijna (Dowe Harcus, otherwise Douwe Harcxz, Harckessen, commanding); retaken on 26 December 1673/5 January 1674 about 8-9 leagues off the Lizard by HMS Dartmouth (Edward Pinn commanding) and brought into Plymouth on 28 December 1673/1677 January 1674.

  • [CP 2]: four examinations taken at Plymouth, 29 December 1673;
  • [CP 3]: appraisement at Plymouth, 9 January 1674;
  • [CP 4]: receipt of salvage, 10 June 1674.

Ships Papers, numbered SP 1-4:-

  • [SP 1]: copy of privateering commission issued in the name of Willem III for unnamed ship, to be commanded by Pieter Harmensen Benninghbroeck, 6 October 1672. Confirmed by Amsterdam admiralty on 14 October 1672, but amended 6 Jan 1673 by same (signed Hiob de Wildt) authorising Douwe Harcxz as captain, this copy annotated by Douwe Harckessen, naming privateer as Ijsabella Cattrijna and authorising Poppe Poppensz to command Susanna;
  • [SP 2]: letter in Dutch, 1 January 1674;
  • [SP 3]: letter in Dutch, 1 January 1674;
  • [SP 4]: bill of lading, river of Seville, 15 December 1673.

Extra information: IND 1/9012 f.79v: Restored on payment of salvage; payment of salvage registered and bail declared void, 26 June 1674.
