Captured ship: Susanna of Friedrichstadt (otherwise Frederiksstad, Holstein) (master Dorem Pieterss, otherwise [Dozen Peters], Dorne)
History: a Duchy of Holstein merchant ship (fluit), bound from the Texel to Leith in ballast; with a passenger John Nisbitt; stopped on 2/12 August 1672 in bad weather about 7-8 leagues south-west of the Texel by the fireship HMS Thomas and Edward (John Holmes [II], commanding [not to be confused with John Holmes [I], the brother of Sir Robert Holmes]); the fireship was in some distress through damage, and forced the Susanna to supply repair materials; promising to release them when the passage was done, Holmes kept the master and 4 men aboard the fireship, putting 4 of his own crew aboard the Susanna to guide the fireship towards land at Southwold Bay, where both ships arrived on 5/15 August and the Susanna was afterwards detained.
