Description

Captured ship: Speedwell of London (master Paul Dod of London)

History: an English merchant ship (100 tons, formerly a Dutch prize taken off the Scottish coast in the Second Anglo-CP Dutch War, 1664-1667, and brought into a Scottish port), now bound from Barbados to London, laden with sugar, molasses, ginger and cotton wool [from and to Jewish merchants]; came into Falmouth just before 26 August/5 September 1672 [and was there seized]. Examination states that the only papers aboard were the master's journal book (citing specific folios regarding details of the cargo) and several letters addressed to several persons in London.
