Captured ship: Providence of London (master Jacob Calloway, otherwise Callaway, of Weymouth or Bermondsey).
History: an English merchant ship (9 men and 2 passengers, built in England), bound from Jamaica to Amsterdam, laden with logwood, including consignments made by Jewish merchants David Gomes and Salomon Gabay in Jamaica; seized on 13/23 June 1672 in Cowes road, Isle of Wight, after coming in there the same day.
Lading including consignments made by Jewish merchants David Gomes and Salomon Gabay in Jamaica. Jacob Callaway, a Quaker, refused to swear on the Bible. 2 passengers, of whom Thomas Bromley was a Quaker.
Court Papers, numbered CP 1-6:-
Ships Papers: at least 138 papers were received by the court, but many were probably restored. Currently here are papers numbered SP 18-22; 41-42; 72-73, 76-80, 86-87, 102, 104, 106, 113-115, 119-130, 133-138. Comprise c49 ship's papers and letters in English, Spanish and Dutch from Jamaica to London and Amsterdam.
Present here are 18-20 (bills), 21-22, 41 (bill for ship Johanah dogger of London, master Robert Cowley, at Jamaica, undated), 42 (invoice for goods aboard ship Industry, master Thomas Foster, undated), 72-73, 76-80, 86-87, 102, 104, 106, 113-115, 119-130 (bills outbound to Jamaica), 133-138 (bills outbound to Jamaica).
