Description

Captured ship: Polish Gentleman of Leek [near Hoorn], otherwise Polske Youncker, Poolse Jonker, Gentilhomme, Polnsche Juncker (master Jacob Maertsen Youncker of Leek, otherwise Jacob Maertsen Joncker, Maleson).

History: a Dutch merchant ship (288 tons/100 lasts, built at Hoorn 3 years before), bound from Riga to Amsterdam, laden with hemp, flax, clapboard and pipe staves; taken on 8/18 August 1672 about 9 leagues south of Heligoland by the privateer Dover Castle ([Peter] Kenton commanding) and brought first into Newcastle upon Tyne and then into London.

Documents:- examinations taken at Newcastle in September 1672; appraisement made at London in March 1673; 66 ship's papers and letters on a thong, numbered by the Court No 2-67 (the numbering here follows this scheme: No 1 is missing; No 67 used as HCA wrapper)

  • [CP 2]: commissions, 2 December 1672 and 3 March 1673;
  • [CP ]: appraisement made at London, 3 March 1673.
