Description

Captured ship: Phoenix of Middelburg, otherwise of Zealand (commander Cornelis Reers).

History: a Dutch privateer (18 guns, 86 men) on a cruise from [Middelburg?]; taken on 7/17 December 1672 by HMS Gloucester (William Coleman commanding), and sent into Salcombe, Devon, arriving 9/19 December 1672.

Court Paper, numbered CP 1:-

  • [CP 1]: certificate (6 March 1673) that this privateering commission was taken aboard Phoenix of Zealand on 7 December 1672;

Ships Paper, numbered SP 1:-

  • [SP 1]: privateering commission (issued by Willem III, Prince of Orange), 28 October 1672;
