Description

Captured ship: St Peter of Friedrichstadt (or Frederiksstad, Holstein), or of Amsterdam (master Mewes Bartholomew Adriansen of Aldmore or Alkmore in Holland [Alkmaar], citizen and resident of Friedrichstadt, otherwise Mievis Aerianson, Mievies Aeriansen, Mewes Adrian).

History: a Duchy of Holstein or Dutch merchant ship (galliot hoy, 60-72 tons/38 lasts, 4 men, built at Rotterdam, bought by the master at Amsterdam about 2 years before), bound from Orotava in the Canary Islands to Amsterdam, laden with Canary wine, 1100 pieces of eight, and several pieces of plate worth 400 pieces of eight; and also silk, velvet plush, and gold and silver lace worth 900 pieces of eight, removed before the ship was brought into Dover; taken on 8/18 April 1672 by HMS Guernsey (Charles Montague, otherwise Mountagu, commanding) and brought into Dover.

Some papers for Amsterdam were thrown overboard by order of the master after her capture. Previously bound from Friedrichstadt to the Canariy Islands. While at the Canary Islands for 6 months, the ship was hired by Stephen Mogrie, a Frenchman, to fetch 'negroes' [as enslaved people] from Cape Verde Island and bring them to Grand Canaria.
