Description

Captured ship: St Paul of Bruges or Nieuwpoort (master Jean de Basse, otherwise Jan de Baest).

History: a Flemish (Spanish Netherlands) merchant ship (30 tons, a former English prize, built in Whitby or Scarborough), bound from Ostend to Plymouth, in ballast; stopped in January 1674 in the port of Plymouth first by HMS Morning Star (Francis Reed commanding), and then by HMS Swan (Thomas Benning commanding).

Court Papers, numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: standing interrogatories;
  • [CP 2]: examinations taken at Plymouth, 23 January 1673/1674;
  • [CP 3]: claim of Legar van de Waller, merchant of Bruges.
