Folios 226-227: James Wallis, HMS Naiad, at Sea. Concerns the purchase of beef for the Squadron last December regarding the cost and the documentation with reference to letters written to Rear Admiral Cochrane.
Folio 228: enclosure in folios 226-227. Letter dated 6 July 1804 from James Wallis, HMS Naiad in Betanzos Bay to Rear Admiral Cochrane. Respone to letter regarding the provisions purchased for his ship particularly the price paid for the beef. Mr. Macfarlane, the late Purser, in correspondence with Vice Consul Fernandez had obtained the lowest price possible and paid 6½ pence per pound for the bullocks but he which was reduced to 5½ pence in Bugalie in January. Sir Edward Pellew on HMS Tennant was told of this in the presence of Captain Cochlan, Mr. Fitzgerald and Mr. Macfarlane which resulted in an argument between the latter two and it was agreed that Mr. Fitzgerald should take reponsibility for future purchases. He does not think he signed vouchers for 10 pence and he is sending Mr. Macfarlane' memo regarding the purchase of the wine and spirits. The boats hired at Ferrol to transport the bullocks were unable to locate the Squadron and had to reland them. They were then driven to Arres where they were cared for untill he was able to load them to deliver to the Squadron.
Folio 229: enclosure in folios 226-227. Letter dated 7 July 1804 from James Wallis, HMS Naiad in Betanzos Bay to Rear Admiral Cochrane. Further letter regarding the purchase of bullocks at Ferrol which proved very difficult as it was against the directions of the Revenue Officers to embark live cattle in December. The delay in finding the Squadron resulting in the animals being relanded at Ferrol and driven to Arras in bad weather before loading them on his ship caused a deterioration in their condition.
