Captured ship: Peace otherwise Vrede of Rotterdam (master John Johnson Veldt or Helt [sic: Veth; Jan Veth] otherwise Giovanni Giovanni Ved).
History: a Dutch merchant ship, bound from Villafranca (previously Messina then Livorno) to Rotterdam, laden with rice, figs, prunes, capers, wine, silk and indigo, soap and brimstone; in company with other ships, taken on 14/24 March 1671/1672 in the Smyrna Convoy action, by HMS Cambridge (Sir Frescheville Holles commanding), and brought into London.
Allegation, 16 April 1672 in Holles v The Peace: Attorney Francklin: the ship Vrede of Rotterdam otherwise Peace, master John Velt (28 guns) was taken in fight on 14 March 1671/1672, off Beachy [Head], sailing in company with the Dutch Smyrna fleet [convoy] and having fought for 'some days or hours' already, was boarded and taken.by HMS Cambridge (Sir Frescheville Holles commanding).
