No 56.

Captured ship: Providence of London (master Jacob Calloway, otherwise Callaway, of Weymouth or Bermondsey).

History: an English merchant ship (9 men and 2 passengers, built in England), bound from Jamaica to Amsterdam, laden with logwood, including consignments made by Jewish merchants David Gomes and Salomon Gabay in Jamaica; seized on 13/23 June 1672 in Cowes road, Isel of Wight, after coming in there the same day.

Allegation and claim (2 September 1672) of Jacob Mendez Gouterez and Joseph da Costa Alverniga of Jamaica, Vernon David and Abraham Alvarez of Jamaica, Isaac de Pavia, Daniel Soorez and Benjamin Israel Franco, citizen of London, for goods in ship Providence (13 pp).

Jacob Mendez Gouterez and Joseph da Costa Alverniga of Jamaica, [Vernon] David and Abraham Alvarez are all residents of Jamaica and subjects of England, traders in Campeche wood and logwood and other West Indies commodities. About March 1671/2, Jacob Mendez Gouterez and Joseph da Costa Alverniga laded Campeche wood. About end-March or early-April 1672, Joseph da Costa Alverniga laded pearl, coconuts and tortoiseshell combs.

    • [1A]/ bill of lading (numbered, on reverse, CM No 49), Jacob Mendes Gutteres and Joseph da Costa, 979 sticks of logwood for delivery to Isack de Paiva and Daniel Soares, 29 March 1672]; wrongly filed in HCA 24/147/55;
    • [1B]/ bill of lading (numbered, on reverse CM No 49), Joseph da Costa, coconuts and [tortoiseshell] combs for delivery to Isack de Paiva, 4 April 1672; wrongly filed in HCA 24/147/55;
  • 2/ original letter (in Portuguese) of Joseph da Costa Alverniga to Benjamin Israel Franco, dated as 30 March/11 April 1672 [sic];
  • 3/ invoice (in Portuguese) for logwood, Jacob Mendez Gouterez and Joseph da Costa Alverniga, dated as 31 March/11 April 1672 [sic];
  • 4/ memorial (in Portuguese) of goods to be shipped to Jamaica, dated as 31 March/11 April 1672 [sic];
  • 5/ original letter of Alvarez to to Francisco de Liz, 2 March 1672, sent via Captain Luinslandt;
  • 6/ original letter (in Portuguese) of Abraham Alvarez (Port Royal) to David Agilar (Amsterdam), 8 March 1671/1672.
