Description

No 55.

Captured ship: Providence of London (master Jacob Calloway, otherwise Callaway, of Weymouth or Bermondsey).

History: an English merchant ship (9 men and 2 passengers, built in England), bound from Jamaica to Amsterdam, laden with logwood, including consignments made by Jewish merchants David Gomes and Salomon Gabay in Jamaica; seized on 13/23 June 1672 in Cowes road, Isel of Wight, after coming in there the same day.

Allegation and claim (undated) of Abraham Perera of Jamaica, Anthony Gomisera (otherwise Gomesera) of London and partners for goods in the Providence, master Jacob Callaway, seized at Cowes (9 pp).

About December 1671 the Providence sailed from London for Jamaica, laden with English goods on account of Abraham Perera, Solomon Gabay, David Gomez, Anthony Gomisera, Jacob Mendez Gouterez and Joseph da Costa Alverigea and others of Jamaica and London, all subjects of England. These same persons also own the outbound [inbound, from Jamaica] lading now seized. About March-April 1672, Perera laded Campeche wood or logwood at or near Port Royal, Jamaica. In case of peace between England and the Dutch Republic, after clearing customs at the Isle of Wight, the ship was to go for Amsterdam. In case of war, the ship was to go for London and deliver the cargo to the factor Anthony Gomisera.

The Providence came into Cowes voluntarily and was seized. Gomisera is an established trader with Jamaica, Moses Zezuzum Cordosa of Jamaica his factor there. Cordosa also laded Campeche wood, with the same destinations specified above, depending if there were peace or war. (Account details here include Manuel Nunez.)

Mentions as attached:-

  • 1/ translation from Portuguese of a letter of Abraham Pereyra (at Port Royal, Jamaica) to Antony Gomez Serra, 8 March 1671/2, sent via Captain Culin, and dated 8 March 1671/2, before the outbreak of war, advising him of the lading and, in case of war, instructing him to insure said goods for £400;
  • 2/ insurance policy raised by Gomisera on said cargo for Perera [not found];
  • 3/ original letter of Cordosa to Gomisera (no date) [not found].

[NOTE: 2 bills of lading, numbered on reverse CM No 49 and CM No 39, are present within this reference, but are not described in the allegation. They belong instead with the next item HCA 24/157/56 as they are for goods laded by Jacob Mendes Gutteres and Joseph da Costa for delivery to Isack de Paiva and Daniel Soares (979 sticks of logwood; coconuts and [tortoiseshell] combs), although these 2 bills of lading are not described at Item 56 either.]
