Hope bought the ship for William Galt, John Galt, John Campsie and himself (equal shares), laded ship on their joint account at or near Amsterdam for Londonderry, Ireland. Ship was stopped for a time at Plymouth, but later unladed at Londonderry and was there laded for Le Havre 'or Ostend or some other port in Flanders' [Spanish Netherlands]. Henry Hope, a Scot, and a subject of England, factor for the Scots Staple in Holland, bought the ship Green Parrot at Amsterdam in July-September 1672, then owned by subjects of Sweden, on the account of himself, John Galt, John Campsie and William Galt 'because Swedish ships would be most free to trade from place to place'. Details several attached schedules. Cite as Bdel 2/1 etc:-

  • 1-8 are letters referring to purchase of ship and goods laden:-
    • 1: John Galt (Coleraine) to Henry Hope, 9 August 1672, plus John Campsie (Londonderry) to Hope, 10 August 1672;
    • 2: [also numbered No 6 on reverse], John Galt (Coleraine) to William Galt, 9 August 1672;

    .
  • 9: Royal Burgh of Edinburgh, certificate of Hope's employment as factor of the Scots Staple in Holland [wanting];
  • 10: Royal Burghs of Scotland, order for Hope's remaining there [wanting];
  • 11: invoice of cargo, Henry Hope, Rotterdam, 6 September 1672
  • 12: original bill of lading for goods, Londonderry, Amsterdam, 2 September 1672. Hope was necessitated in Holland to pretend that the goods were bound for Danzig [Gdansk], to prevent seizure by Dutch warships, but the ship was solely bound to Londonderry, and thence to France or Flanders with butter and other Irish goods. On passage to Londonderry, ship was forced by contrary winds to make for Torbay, but was taken by HMS Dragon and brought in there. Lists goods embezzled by captor crew. Details attached schedule:
  • 13: certificate at Plymouth, signed by mayor Lanyon. On departure from Amsterdam for the Texel, Hope sent a letter to the master, pretending that the ship was bound for Fiall [Fayal, Faial, Azores], but he was actually to go direct to Londonderry; attestation of master and 2 crewmen, Plymouth, 18 October 1672;
  • 14: attestation of master, Plymouth, 25 October [1672]. Henry Hope, John Galt, 'and other Englishmen' had freighted the ship in a previous voyage and decided to buy her, but concealed the purchase from the master, in order that he be more convincing (in maintaining that the ship was Swedish) if stopped by the Dutch. Master did not know the ship was 'English' until after the capture.
