Captured ship: Mayflower, otherwise Maytree (master Cornelius Joossen).

History: a Dutch [fishing vessel] ([dogger], [laden with some perishable goods, fish]; taken on 2/12 January 1672/1673 [on the Dogger Bank], by the Scots privateer Speedwell (Charles Whittington commanding) and her pinnace Royal Charles, on a Scottish commission, and brought into [Newcastle].

Allegation, 6 August 1673 in Whittington v The Mayflower, otherwise Maytree, Cornelius Joossen, taken by [privateer] Speedwell, Charles Whittington commanding. In January-March 1671/2 and April 1672-January 1672/1673, [Charles Stewart] Duke of Lennox and Richmond, now deceased, was Lord High Admiral of Scotland, authorised to issue Letters of Marque. The King put the ship Speedwell into Lennox's hands for his own use as he saw fit. Lennox set out for war the ship Speedwell and her pinnace or boat Royal Charles, manned with subjects of Scotland, Whittington had 'a commission ... from ... late Duke'. On 2 January 1672/1673 ship Mayflower was seen, chased and taken. Prize was proceeded against in the Admiralty Court of Scotland and condemned: ship and lading as belonging to Lennox, Lord High Admiral of Scotland, 'or the said Captain Whittington', then proceeded against by Whittington in the Admiralty Court of Scotland and sentenced as his.
