Description

No 45.

Captured ship: Landsman [Landtsman] of Amsterdam, otherwise Landsheer, Lanceman or Lanciero (late master Derrick Hilbrandtson de Hawne of Waterland, otherwise Hillebrandt Haen).

History: a Dutch merchant ship bound from Smyrna (Izmir), Leghorn (Livorno) and Cadiz to Amsterdam, laden with silks, cotton, wool and other goods, also some silver; taken in fight on 13/23 March 1672 off Beachy Head (in company with other Dutch ships, in the Smyrna Convoy action at the outbreak of war in 1672) by HMS Fairfax (George Legge commanding), and brought first into the Downs and then into London.

Allegation and claim, 10 May 1672, of Francisco Venturini of Livorno, subject of Tuscany. Venturini has lived at Leghorn for 7-20 years, a great merchant in silks and other goods to Amsterdam and other ports. From September 1671 to February 1672 he bought and laded silk (merchant mark in margin), consigned to his factor at Amsterdam. Ship was taken and silk is now at London. There was and is peace between England and Tuscany. [Following is struckthrough: Claim of John de Wickevort (merchant mark in margin).]
