Description

No 44.

Captured ship: Landsman [Landtsman] of Amsterdam, otherwise Landsheer, Lanceman or Lanciero (late master Derrick Hilbrandtson de Hawne of Waterland, otherwise Hillebrandt Haen).

History: a Dutch merchant ship bound from Smyrna (Izmir), Leghorn (Livorno) and Cadiz to Amsterdam, laden with silks, cotton, wool and other goods, also some silver; taken in fight on 13/23 March 1672 off Beachy Head (in company with other Dutch ships, in the Smyrna Convoy action at the outbreak of war in 1672) by HMS Fairfax (George Legge commanding), and brought first into the Downs and then into London.

Allegation and claim, 19 April 1672, of William Galt and William Black of London, for goods in the Landtsman, master Hellibrant Haen. Galt and Black are both subjects of England, Galt resident of London, Black at Smyrna. They trade between Smyrna, Leghorn and other places in the Mediterranean to London, other English ports and Amsterdam and other Dutch ports. In November 1671 Black laded fine bevayes or grogrine/grograyne [grosgram] yarn (the merchant mark given in margin) on their account, consigned to their factor Isaack Gerrard, an Englishman at Amsterdam. The master signed 3 bills of lading for these goods, 1 of which is attached as schedule [no longer here]. Their goods were laden long before war was declared, and war had not been declared at the time of capture.
