Description

No 43.

Captured ship: Landsman [Landtsman] of Amsterdam, otherwise Landsheer, Lanceman or Lanciero (late master Derrick Hilbrandtson de Hawne of Waterland, otherwise Hillebrandt Haen).

History: a Dutch merchant ship bound from Smyrna (Izmir), Leghorn (Livorno) and Cadiz to Amsterdam, laden with silks, cotton, wool and other goods, also some silver; taken in fight on 13/23 March 1672 off Beachy Head (in company with other Dutch ships, in the Smyrna Convoy action at the outbreak of war in 1672) by HMS Fairfax (George Legge commanding), and brought first into the Downs and then into London.

Allegation, 16 April 1672, of Legge. On 14/24 March 1671/1672 in the Channel off Beachy [Head], about the time of the Smyrna convoy action, or some other battle with Dutch ships, the ship fought against HMS Fairfax 'for some days or hours', was boarded and taken, and brought into London.
