Description

No 23.

Captured ship: Forlorn Son otherwise Verloren Zoon or Prodigal Son of Heusden [Huisduinen] (commander Sijnnen Jansen Zoon).

History: a Dutch privateer (galliot hoy, 16 lasts, 18 men, built in the Dutch Republic), bound on a cruise from Heusden [Huisduinen, North Holland], taken in fight about 4 am on 18/28 February 1673/1674, near the port of Scalloway, Shetland, after a 2-hour fight, by an improvised party of 40 men in boats under Lieutenant Paul Mercer from HMS Cambridge (Arthur Herbert commanding), the warship being unable to approach in the shallow water, and brought into London.

Allegation, 30 May 1674, in Mercer / Herbert v Forlorn Son. HMS Cambridge during January-March 1673/1674 was lying in a bay in north-east Scotland, and received news of a Dutch ship near Scalloway, but drawing too much water to attack, Lieutenant Mercer procured boats and attacked on 28 February 1673/1674 with 40 men, the fight lasting 2 hours.
