No 17 [1 of 7 allegations for this ship; this one is for the captor].
Captured ship: Dolphin of Stockholm (master John Johnson de Old Boere of Amsterdam, citizen of Stockholm, otherwise Jan Janss de Oude Boer).
History: a Swedish merchant ship (171 lasts, 8 guns, 30 crew and passengers, including 4 women, built by Mr Skelton at Stockholm the previous year [1671]), bound from Amsterdam and the Texel to Stockholm, laden with lemons, Holland cheese, green cheese, pickled herrings, currants, wine, tobacco, prunes and other goods (soap, paint, pump leathers) on the account of the Royal Swedish navy; taken on [31] July/10 August 1672 between the Vlie and the Texel by HMS Mermaid (John Temple commanding), and brought into Harwich on 5/15 August 1672.
Allegation (23 August 1672) in Temple v The Dolphin.
Gives both capture date and date brought in as 1 August 1672. Mentions that master brought a tin box containing his papers aboard HMS Mermaid, that several other papers were found in his chest, that fresh papers were made up after capture, and that at capture the ship's guns were loaded, with match and small arms readied. Repeats Temple's belief that the crew were only disuaded from fighting by the approach of HMS Antelope; the master confessed such.
