Description

Captured ship: St Magdalene of Nieuwpoort, otherwise Magdalen (master Louis Bommelaer of Dunkirk, resident of Nieuwpoort, otherwise Lowys Bommelaer, Lewis Bommelare).

History: a Flemish (Spanish Netherlands) merchant ship (ketch, 45 tons, 7 men, previously named Rebecca when bought at Rotterdam in October 1672 from Samuel Tucker, said to have been built at Great Yarmouth), bound from Bordeaux to the fire beacon before Nieuwpoort to await his merchants' order (for Nieuwpoort or Hamburg), laden with wine, brandy and tobacco; forced by bad weather and contrary winds on 27 January/6 February 1672/1673 into Cowes, Isle of Wight, and there seized.

Documents:- examinations, abstract of eight ship's papers (only 1 of which is in the Ships Papers listed below).

Court Papers, numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: four examinations taken at Cowes, 5 February 1672/3;
  • [CP 2]: abstract and translation of eight ship's papers (most of these papers were restored);
  • [CP 3]: attestation of Guilliame Miles before the council of Nieuwpoort, 11 March 1673 (copy).

Ships Papers numbered SP 1-4: 2 letters to Guilliame Milles, an invoice and a bill of lading (SP 3, corresponding to No 3 in the abstracts):-
