Description

Folios 516-517: William Wilkinson, HMS Gorgon, Leith Roads. Responding to Lord Keith’s directions, Lieutenant McKay has been on impress service using the tender of the Royal George Revenue vessel. The Lieutenant boarded a Greenland ship and the Master produced the log book where it was recorded that the crew was landed in the Orkneys; this was collaborated with other papers. The Lieutenant could only get men who were Line Coilers and Boat Steerers. Since then he has learnt that a strong application was made on behalf of the boat owners and the Master has boasted how he tricked the Officer and HM Service. Captain Wilkinson apologises and the men will be detained for the Service and this will act as a warning to the Master. He asks for directions on this matter.

Folio 518-519: enclosure with folios 516-517. Letter dated 10 August 1803 by Peter Christopher Wood, Burrish Lyons and other Boat Owners, Leith, to the Admiralty. Asks for intervention concerning the fishing trade and the impress of men on the Raith under Robert Kelly, Master. The Raith had recently returned from whale fishing with George Ritchie and Peter Levingston, Boat Steerers; John Renton and Charles [Pow?] Line Managers and James Johnston, Charles Jones and Nathan [Pow?] Seamen. Lieutenant McKay pressed these men and they are confined on board HMS Gorgon. An appeal has been made to the Protection Officer employed in the Fishery previously attentive to the fishing trade and an appeal made to Captain Nash who refused to discharge the men.
