Folios 264-265: James Wallis, HMS Naiad, Bristol. Responds to the request for information on William Hilliard, late Purser's Steward of the ship. The information is contained in the enclosed letter from the Purser. Hilliard was never entered as an Ordinary Seaman, but as a Purser's Steward. Mentions that the discontent alluded to among the ship's company was not apparent.
Folio 266-267: enclosure with folios 264-265. Letter dated 2 January 1803 by J. Macfarlane, to Captain Wallis, HMS Naiad. Responds to the request for the reasons for the dismissal of William Hilliard, past Steward and not issuing the usual certificate in order for obtaining pay. The reasons were a repetition of neglect of duty: Including not making entries in his Mess book for provisions and allowing the Cook to keep the keys to Beef and Park chests and permitting pieces to be issued to the Officers or their servants. Until this is settled from Hilliard's private salary, he will withhold the usual certificate .
