Folios 138-139: Thomas Wallbeoff [Regulating Captain] Poole. In response to a letter, he is aware that Lord Pelham, a Secretary of State has written to the Lord Lieutenants of maritime counties instructing Magistrates to take up Seamen. Since then he has only been sent 2 persons and they were take up by the Constable of Ringwood. Many seamen now are following other occupations. An Act of Parliament could oblige Magistrates to direct suitable persons to the Navy. A local Gentleman of high status says that Magistrates would never undertake this odious task of being crimps [pimps]? for the Navy
