Description

Captured ship: Kettle of Flushing, otherwise Kittell [Ketel] (commander George Price otherwise Joris Prijs).

History: a Dutch privateer (frigate, 50 tons) bound on a cruise from Flushing; cruised off Land's End and the entrance to the Channel, where she took an English ship (a little pink from Barbados), and a French ship from the Newfoundland banks; endured storms and bad weather and made for home, but was forced by worse weather to seek refuge; intending to make for Torbay, they mistook the Lizard for Start Point and hence were forced to put in for Falmouth; finding on the morning of 22 December 1672/1 January 1673 that two Royal Navy frigates were in the harbour, they took the ship up the creek [the River Fal] toward Tresillian Bridge as far as she could swim, at St Clement [on the River Tresillian] and then stripped her; aiming to avoid beng made prisoners of war, they surrendered her to 2 small boats of men from St Clements, and tried to escape ashore.
