Description

Captured ship: St Joseph (prize master Andries Michielsen of Amsterdam).

History: a French merchant ship (80 tons) bound from the French Caribbean to Europe, laden with sugar; taken in May or June 1673 off Guadeloupe by the Dutch warship Noord-Holland (Admiral Jacob Binckes [or Benckes], Amsterdam admiralty, commanding) and sent in for Amsterdam; retaken on 28 September/8 October 1673 off Beachy Head by the privateer Revenge (John Aden commanding) and brought into Dover.

Court Papers, numbered CP 1:-

  • [CP 1]: three examinations taken at Dover, 1 October 1673.

Ships Paper, numbered SP 1:-

  • [SP 1]: commission from Binckes for Andries Michielsen to command the prize St Joseph.

Extra information:-

  • Information given in the examinations by all 3 deponents referring to the Dutch captor as a privateer is in error;
  • IND 1/9012 f.41v: ship and lading condemned, 3 November 1673.
