Description

Captured ship: St John Evangelist of Ostend (master John Bockhusius, otherwise Bockhusios).

History: a Flemish (Spanish Netherlands) merchant ship, [bound from Corunna to Ostend], laden with Virginia tobacco, lead, pickled pepper and chestnuts; taken [before 27 November/7 December 1672 off Corunna by the privateer Revenge (John Aden commanding) and brought into Dover.

Court Paper, numbered CP 1:-

  • [CP 1]: list of claims for Englsih property [the cargo was said by the crew to be entirely English prize goods previously taken by Dutch privateers into Corunna and being transported to the Netherlands].

Extra information:-

  • IND 1/9012 f.40: ship and some goods restored, 14 February 1672/3;
  • See Calendar of State Papers Domestic 1672-1673, pp 437-439 (16 January 1673) [SP 29/332 nos 107-108]; and also Calendar of State Papers Domestic 1672-1673, pp 250, 400.
