Description

Folios 317-318: Thomas Wolley, HMS Arethusa off Havre.

Explains that some time ago he had taken on a young man called Thomas Hoare, from Christ's Hospital, intending to get him appointed schoolmaster for the ship. Before leaving Christ's, Hoare had passed an examination at Trinity House, 'in every respect similar' to the exam for schoolmasters, and they still hold his certificate. However, Hoare was informed by the clerk there that he would have to be re-examined before a certificate for schoolmaster could be granted. Wolley says he sent him up to town, at great expense because he was kept waiting for several weeks, at the end of which they refused to examine him, saying he was Wolley's apprentice. Asks that the Trinity House employees might be reproved for having so presumed against a direction by their Lordships, and that they be asked to approve the certificate already in their possession, or the one held by the master of the academy at Portsmouth, as being sufficient, without requiring Thomas Hoare to appear again for further examination.
