Description

Folios 288-289: Isaac Wolley, HMS Nonsuch. Enclosing a letter received that morning from the commander of a Russian naval ship, the Raphael, which has just anchored in Hull Roads. The letter was written by the pilot of the ship, and in consequence of the information given Wolley has written to the mayor of Hull and the commander of HM forces to acquaint them of his intention to land the wounded Russians as soon as possible, and for the agent for the Sick and Hurt at Hull to be ready for them. Has also given orders to the Honourable Captain St Clair, of HMS Martin in Hull roads, to personally superintend the disembarkation. Wolley has told the commander of the Raphael he will given him every assistance and has directed the boats of HM ships in the Humber to be ready to assist also. Folios 290-291: enclosure with folios 288-289. Dated 28 October 1799, the letter from the Raphael, written on behalf of the captain but unsigned. Advises that they have have just anchored, with 190 wounded Russian soldiers from the Texel, and are 'in want of every assistance!' Requests an immediate order for landing the sick men as the ship is leaking and has lost both main and mizen masts.
