Description

Folios 276-277: Isaac Wolley, HMS Nonsuch. Responding to Admiralty query, says that should it be judged advisable to hold a court martial on John Brown, seaman, the witnesses required would be: William Mules, first lieutenant; I. C. Thorne, midshipman; John Burgin, boatswain's mate; James Leith, ship's corporal; William Chisholm, ship's carpenter. The accused man says he cannot call witnesses of his own as he has no recollection of the events. He has written two letters, enclosed. Wolley says he is certain that Lt Mules's only reason for lodging the complaint was for the good of the service and that he will be pleased to abide by whatever decision their Lordships should come to regarding the man's future. Folios 278-279: enclosure with folios 276-277. John Brown's letter to Captain Wolley, saying he acted in the 'stupidness of liquor' and humbly begs that the captain will intervene to prevent the 'cruel punishment' due to him. Folios 280-281: Enc with folios 276-277: Brown's letter to Lt Mules, saying he hopes that his 'human goodness' will consider his unhappy state and again citing the cause as stupidness of liquor, and not knowing what he was doing.
