Description

Folios 252-253: Isaac Wolley, HMS Nonsuch. Reporting that he had the previous day sent the letter with orders for the commander of the Phoenix to prepare for sea, but as the lugger had been at Hull since the 7th September, he was surprised to receive the answer which he encloses. In a postscript he says he had been onto the wharf to look at the Phoenix, but found her with her guns out and neither the master nor the Lieutenant on board. Folio 254: enclosure with folios 252-253. Letter to Wolley from Henry Hawes, of the Phoenix, saying he has just received the former's orders of the previous day, and the letter sent today, 24 September, and that no time shall be lost in preparing the ship for sea. However, her bottom is very foul, she could not be refitted at Yarmouth, and the deck will not be ready until the following Friday, so he cannot comply with the order to sail to White Booth Roads this tide. He estimates she will be in dock for two days, and ready for sea two days after that. Folio 255: enclosure with folios 252-253. The follow-up letter from Wolley, 24 September, to the Phoenix, saying he wanted her to sail down to White Booth Roads that day, and if not to advise why.
