Folios 189-190: Charles Wollaston, HMS Cruizer, at sea. Reporting that following orders from Vice Admiral Dickson he sailed from Yarmouth on 6 January 1799, together with the cutters Diligence and Griffin, in order to take mail to Norderney, or nearby. However on approaching the shoreline he was met with 'nothing but ice' and says even if he had been able to get through he is convinced no boat could have been got on shore. Judges the ice must extend at least three leagues from shore. Therefore felt it the right thing to do to return to England and advise the government as soon as possible by means of the Griffin going on ahead, that the mail could not get through.
