Folios 155-156: Robert Winthrop, HMS Circe in the River Ems. Letter enclosing a copy of his letter to Vice Admiral Mitchell, sent three days previously.
Folios 156A-156B: enclosure with folios 155-156A. Copy of letter from Captain Winthrop to Admiral Mitchell. Explains he had been detained in the Ems by contrary winds, which prevented him from joining Mitchell's action at the Zuyder Zee. Says he did manage to reconnoitre the port of Delfzyl[?] where he discovered a sloop of war and a schooner lying within musket shot of the batteries. He thought he could take them by a 'coup de main' but again the weather was tempestuous and nothing could be achieved until the night of the 8th. Delfzyl being about 20 miles from the ship, the boats left with the tide and the attack on the ship was led by Lt Maughn, with Lt Paul attacking the schooner. They boarded and carried them 'in a very gallant manner', happily without losses although the enemy guns were loaded and primed, with matches lighted. The ship is the Lynx, 12 guns, 8- and 12-pounders, and 75 men; the schooner is the Perseus, with eight 4-pounders and 40 men. Gives much praise to his officers and men for their successful action and conduct throughout, particularly the two lieutenants. Also expresses his gratitude to Lt Buckle, of the Hawke, cutter, and Captain May, a naval officer in the service of the Prince of Orange, who volunteered their services on this occasion.
