Description

Folios 203-206. A letter from [Sir] Ri [Richard] Heron to Sir Stanier Porten concerning intelligence from North America. Dated at Dublin Castle. Enclosing: Folios 205-206: A letter from Commissary Robert Gordon to Sir Richard Heron, dated at Cork [Munster]. A fleet of vessels victualling [the British army in North America] has just arrived after leaving New York on 27 September 1778, when all was reported well. General [Henry] Clinton and the army were then 'foraging the Jerseys' [New Jersey]. Lord Howe, in [HMS?] Eagle has left for England leaving command of the fleet with Mr [Vice-Admiral John] Byron, then at Rhode Island in [HMS] Prince Royal. Rebels in Rhode Island are 'in no position to disturb our troops. [Admiral] D'Estaing and his fleet were in Boston [Massachusetts], where the French have 'taken a meeting house' and are at 'daggers drawn' with the Americans. In an accusation to Congress, General Sullivan has alleged Desting [D'Estaing] was neglect and had not supported his attack on Rhode Island. Also mentions: General Robinson, General Jones, and a Hessian general Lord Barrasdale [Barisdale?].
